October Commitments - Why I'm Skipping a Month

Each month I commit to doing five things that will improve my life, my health, my home, or my blog. These are my commitments for October 2016.

I didn’t do great with monthly goals for September. I didn’t complete my drinking water goal or deep clean my bedroom.

But not completing one of my goals was intentional. I chose not to write a blog post every day of my vacation. Cap and I went to Myrtle Beach for a few days, and I took my laptop along fully intending to write every morning. But you know what? I never had the desire to even open my laptop. I just wanted to enjoy time with my boyfriend and relax. It was wonderful!

I realize that as a part time blogger this is a luxury for me. I don’t rely on my blog for income, so it wasn’t a big deal to ignore it for a few days. Except in a way it was, because I needed the break from my self-imposed goals.

I work full time. My 9-5 is actually an 8PM-8AM, so I work 48 hours a week. I have a boyfriend, parents, a sister, brother-in-law, and now a nephew that I want to spend time with, and I have a dog that relies on me for her care. I also have an apartment to upkeep. All of this is on top of running my blog, which I do just for me, but it’s still a lot of work. And I realized that I needed a bit of vacation from that work, even if it’s work that I love and enjoy.

And taking those few days off from blogging made me realize that I wanted a break from goals. Just for one month. I have to work, and I will be working on the blog as usual, but no big projects or anything else. Sometimes we need to allow ourselves space to just be!

We all get so caught up in the things that we want to do or feel like we need to do that we forget to enjoy life! So, sometimes it’s good to take a step back, relax, and stop beating ourselves up about goals not met. After all, those goals will be there waiting for me in November. And by then I hope to be refreshed enough to tackle them.

For October, I want an easy month so that I can enjoy the beginning of Fall before the holidays take over my life.

So, I guess I do have one goal for October – enjoy it!

  1. I’m not a big Goal gal, but I definitely have to take breaks from blogging and pushing myself to build my blog. Sometimes life is just more important. Blogging is one thing I do just for me though, so I know I’ll always recommit after my breaks. I hope you have a stress-free October… or at least a less stressed one!!

  2. I relate to this post 100%, especially this week with hectic activities and just wanting to relax. Sometimes having the goal of not sticking to any goals (if that makes any sense lol) can be the best things for us, especially when needing to recharge mentally and creatively. I hope you have a stress free and easy going month of October!

  3. That sounds like a really nice idea, actually! I think it’s important to sometimes take a step back from blogging and just relax. 😀 I just took a 10 day hiatus and didn’t blog at all which was niiiice. It’s good to turn off because you come back refreshed. :’)

  4. I used to vacation almost every year at Myrtle Beach! Now I live across the country and haven’t made it back in some time.

    I’m glad you took the time to relax and enjoy your vacation. This is a great reminder that breaks are an important part of our self care too! I seriously need to unplug for a couple of days but the thought is scary.

    I could probably do it for a beach and a boyfriend though.

  5. I understand the concept of “un-plug” and just be. It’s refreshing. I also love to write my blog, so both sides are good. I find I make goals but like to leave wiggle room, to allow myself to just go with the moment. I always have clean house on the list, ick, but somehow be creative every day takes precedence. LeeAnna
