What I learned about blogging from my Chihuahua

A while back, Erin wrote a post about life lessons she had learned from her dog. It was such great post, and it got me thinking about what I had learned from Buffy, because I have learned so much from this little dog with a big heart!

And as I was thinking about writing my own post, I realized that so much of what I had learned from Buffy could be applied to blogging. So here, are six things that I learned from my Chihuahua that will help you and your blog!

Don’t be afraid to show your enthusiasm

Buffy has the cutest way of greeting those that she loves as soon as they walk in the door. She dances around on her back paws, while clapping her front paws together. She’s also singing (whining and barking) about how glad she is that you’re home! It’s an amazing thing to see! Buffy leaves no room for doubt that she is happy to see you!

And we need to be that same way on our blogs! Whatever it is that you love, even if other people think it’s weird or geeky or nerdy, that love and passion should show through on your blog. Hopefully when you read my blog, you can see how much I love writing and blogging, and things like Harry Potter and Doctor Who! And Buffy too, of course!

Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want

If Buffy wants something, she’s not afraid to ask for it. When she wants under the covers, she taps me with her paw until I wake up and let her under the covers. If she wants a piece of jerky, she goes and sits by her toy/treat bag to let me know.

If there is something that you want for your blog, don’t be afraid to go after it! Do you want to guest post at one of your favorite blogs? Is there a blogging course you want to take? Whatever it is that you want for your blog, go after it!

Protect those you love

Buffy has those that she dances for, her family and friends. Everyone else – gets the growl if they try to pet her! If a stranger knocks on my door, Buffy leaves no doubt that this is her home, and she is going to protect it!

And you have to protect your blog! Though maybe not as aggressively as Buffy! Make sure that you back up your blog. Have a secure password. Don’t fall behind on updating WordPress, your plugins, and theme. These things might not be fun, but they are important to keeping your blog safe.

Sometimes you have to do things you don’t like

Buffy loves going for walks, but she hates being on a leash. Hates it! But she submits to it, because she knows it’s the only way she will get to go. And I make her do it, because it’s required at the apartments, but also because I know walking is good for us both.

What is it that you dislike about blogging? For me, it’s self-promotion. It feels weird, and icky. But I want people to read my blog. And for that to happen they have to know my blog exists, which means I have to promote it!

What about you? If there is some blogging task that you dislike, but know is necessary to the benefit of your blog, make yourself do it. I promise it will be worth it. Making myself get out there and promote my blog has been worth it for me!

It’s Ok to let other’s do things for you

Buffy is spoiled. I admit it. If you don’t believe me, try offering her a whole hot dog to eat. She won’t take it until it’s cut into Buffy sized bites. It’s part of her charm. And it’s also a great lesson that sometimes it’s OK to let other’s take care of things for you.

I wanted to take the pictures for my blog, and design my own theme. But you know what? That was just too much for me to take on. So, I let other’s handle those things for me, so that I can focus on writing for and growing my blog. Take a look and see if there are any blog tasks that you can source out as well.

Make time to play

Buffy loves to play! And she is up for it anytime! Do you want to play fetch? Or chase? Or Tug-of-war? Then so does Buffy!

As bloggers, it’s so easy for us to get caught up in working on our blogs all the time, that we forget to play! We need to remember to make time for ourselves, and things we love doing. And we need to do so without guilt, because Buffy never feels guilty about her play time. She knows how important it is!

Be patient. Your time will come

Like I said above, Buffy loves to play, and she would all the time. But when I’m reading or working on the blog, you know what she does? She lays there patiently beside me or in my lap, knowing that eventually the time will come for us to play together.

As bloggers, we all dream of the day when our blogs get tons of visitors and comments and shares on social media. I blog because I love to write, and I want people to read what I write. So, you and I need to keep writing, putting ourselves out there, knowing that eventually our time will come.

So, what about you? Do you have any words of wisdom from your pets to share? Do you agree with Buffy’s blogging philosophy? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I love this post, Paula! What a fun idea to look at your business through what you can learn from your pup!

I was trying to pick one single thing to point out that I really agreed with, but every point is spot on. And thank you so much for linking to my post! ๐Ÿ™‚
